CIRCLE DESIGNATED NEW NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
INTERNATIONAL PASSENGERS AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR 2008
Miami Circle is among nine new National Historic Landmarks designated by
outgoing Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne. Discovered in 1998, the
Miami Circle site at Brickell Point, is a nationally significant archaeological
site located at the mouth of the Miami River in downtown Miami. Archaeological
excavations at the site uncovered components of the primary village of the Tequesta,
one of the first Native North American groups encountered by Juan Ponce de León
in 1513. The site preserves evidence of the complex and planned architecture
unique to the Tequesta, including the Miami Circle feature, which is a 38-ft.
circular footprint of a prehistoric structure. The Miami Circle is one of 41
National Historic Landmarks in Florida. The Circle joins an elite group which
include Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the Biltmore Hotel, Fort Zachary Taylor,
Cape Canaveral Station and the Freedom Tower, which was recognized last October
by Secretary Kempthorne. The
Historical Museum of Southern Florida illuminates the history of the Miami
Circle in its permanent exhibit, First Arrivals: The Miami Circle.
Passenger arrivals at Miami International Airport (MIA) continued to experience
positive increases for twelve months of 2008 despite global economic challenges.
For the twelve months, passenger arrivals revealed a 0.9% increase over the same
time period last year, with international arrivals growing by 3.6% -a record 8,149,108
passengers passed through MIA in 2008 -and domestic arrivals down by -1.5%.
MATT DAMON KEEPS THE PAPARAZZI RUNNING
They come, they go. Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, Cher . . .
Hollywood celebrities who move to South Florida to get away from it all inevitably
seem to go back looking for it all after a while. Not Matt Damon.
He and wife Luciana have been living in Miami Beach for four years, and they
plan to stick around. ''The business definitely does not require you to live
in Hollywood, at least not for me at this point in my career,'' Damon says.
``Very, very few of my movies get shot in Los Angeles. And here, I don't have
to deal with any of the nonsense.
There are guys waiting outside the gates to
our house 24/7. But here, my wife and I figured out pretty quickly, it's only
on the weekends, because Miami paparazzi have day jobs. They can't hang around
all the time. So we just never go out on the weekends. The only time I leave
is to go jogging.
"One of the guys stopped me once and said, 'Can't you do something
besides jog? I've got like 20,000 pictures of you jogging.' And I said, 'Man,
that's the whole point.'
'Matt is taping the narration for an episode of the
PBS environmental series Journey To Planet Earth at a Coconut Grove studio.
