Perez Art Museum Miami
Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)
serves the city's thriving community of artists, designers, and collectors
and its avid and growing art-viewing public, who are driving Miami's demand
for a world-class museum for the display of contemporary art. There are
constantly special exhibits. See the link below for current details.
Founded
in 1997, MAM was a young modern art institution housed
in the Miami-Dade Cultural Centre, together with the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, History Miami and the main county public library. It
was a relatively small space conceived as an exhibition hall and therefore
lacked the facilities to maintain its full collection. The new MAM, named for Jorge M. Perez, a multi-millionaire land developer and patron of the arts, is now a highly visible landmark amid Miami's cityscape. It is located, together with the new Science
Museum, in Museum Park, a little used public park between the Ardienne
Arsht Centre for the Performing Arts and the American
Airlines Arena on Biscyane Boulevard. Groundbreaking was on October
2009, with completion in December 2013. The new building is LEED green
and sensitive to the city's need for public space, the new PMAM building
is designed to extend the park into the museum site by means of a shaded
outdoor terrace accessible to all visitors. Miami is renown as the winter
home of Art Basel, so it is only appropriate that the design of this new
museum has been awarded to the renown architectural firm of Herzog
& de Meuron,
based in Basel, Switzerland and known amongst other works for the transformation
of a power plant into Tate Modern, in London (2000) and the Beijing "bird's
nest" olympic stadium (2008).
